Helpful Tips
Keep trees, shrubs, and vegetative growth 12" to 18" away from exterior of structure(s) to discourage insects, rodents and the development of mold/mildew on the exterior siding and interior of perimeter walls.
Start mulch 2" to 3" away from foundation - best choice of mulch - cedar and cypress (resistant to termite and insect activity.
Keep grade level (soil/mulch) 3" to 6" below bottom edge of siding (brick, vinyl, wood, etc.) to not allow direct access of soil infesting pests such as:
Do not use wood timbers for landscape edging. Even treated lumber and creosote ties lose their termite resistance.
Keep firewood or stacked lumber 50' from the structure(s), and separate from soil contact. Caulk/Seal cracks and openings 1/8" or larger to; foundation doors, windows, trim boards, face boards, eaves, and roof edges above gutters.
Maintain good guttering (tapered), downspouts, and extend drains at least 18" away from foundation.
Prevent rain water or moisture from accumulating near or on structures to discourage development of mold, fungus, mosquitoes, rodents, termites and other insect pests.
