Is your home animal proof?

Prime denning season is approaching for female squirrels, racoons, and opossums. Is your home animal proof? Or have you started hearing unexplainable noises at night or early morning coming from the attic, walls, or fireplace area. These animals will seek out uncapped chimneys, gaps or spaces in soffits & eaves as places to enter your home to birth their young during late winter or spring. In many cases these gaps or holes are out of site from ground observation on the exterior of your home. Typical chimney cap during installation. For example, the space between the sub-roofing (beneath shingles) and facia board (where gutter attached) can be upwards of 2 to 4 inches. This is a prime squirrel entry point in winter, or bird entry for nesting in the spring if the shingle overlap does not adequately protect this gap. Or, in some cases, shingles are lifted or chewed to access the gap. This gap can be blocked by installing a solid leaf guard or gutter guard system. Installing exclusion materials such as sheet metal or hardware cloth can block localized entry points. Installation can be made by the homeowner or an ABES service technician.

As a homeowner be sure you have chimney caps installed and that flu dampers are in good working order and closed when not in use. If you suspect or are experiencing an entry by racoons or squirrels in your chimney flu be sure that the damper is in place & closed. Do not build a fire. If the furnace or hot water heater are exhausted to the suspected flu, be sure they are drafting properly to avoid carbon monoxide buildup. Do not try to install a makeshift screen over the flu top to block access as this cover may build up leaf debris, snow, ice and cause hazardous carbon monoxide to enter inside the home resulting in severe illness or possibly death. Consult a Heating & Air professional for suspected flu blockage or malfunctions.

Call ABES for an inspection / evaluation of the situation if animals are determined or suspect to be the cause.
